What an ICL is
An Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a soft, biocompatible lens placed inside the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. No corneal tissue is removed, so the cornea's structural thickness is preserved.
Because the natural lens stays in place, the eye's own focusing ability is not removed in younger patients.
Measurements that decide suitability
Anterior chamber depth, white-to-white or sulcus measurements, endothelial cell count, intraocular pressure, angle assessment and a dilated retinal examination are all required before an ICL is considered. Lens sizing is calculated from these measurements, not estimated.
The procedure and early recovery
The lens is inserted through a small incision under topical anaesthesia and unfolds into position. Vision often improves quickly, though drops and a review schedule are essential in the first weeks.
Long-term follow-up matters
ICL patients are advised periodic checks of intraocular pressure, vault position and endothelial health for as long as the lens remains in the eye. The lens can be removed or exchanged if clinically required.
Risks discussed before consent
Possible issues include pressure elevation, cataract formation, glare or halos, and the need for repositioning in a small number of eyes. These are explained with your own measurements in front of you before any decision.
