What patients usually notice first
Gradual blurring, glare from oncoming headlights, faded or yellowed colours, difficulty reading in dim light and frequent spectacle changes are common early complaints. Some patients report a temporary improvement in near vision before things worsen.
The old advice about waiting is outdated
Modern micro-incision surgery does not require the cataract to harden first. In fact, a very dense cataract can make surgery more demanding and recovery slower. The practical question is whether the cataract is interfering with your driving, reading, work or independence.
What the evaluation includes
Vision testing, slit-lamp examination, intraocular pressure, optical biometry for lens power calculation and a dilated retinal examination. Where the retina cannot be seen clearly, additional imaging may be advised, because macular health affects the vision achievable after surgery.
Conditions that change the plan
Diabetes, glaucoma, previous refractive surgery, corneal disease or a history of retinal problems all influence lens choice and counselling. These are identified before surgery, not discovered afterwards.
