Robotic-assisted laser cataract surgery with CATALYS: what the laser step adds

Perfect Vision Editorial Team · Medically reviewed by Dr. Virendra Agrawal · 7 min read · 2026-03-20

Which steps the laser performs

In femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, the Johnson & Johnson Vision CATALYS Precision Laser System performs the corneal incisions, the circular opening in the lens capsule and the initial fragmentation of the cataract, guided by real-time imaging of your own eye.

The surgeon then completes the removal of the cataract and implants the intraocular lens.

Why the capsulotomy matters

A precisely sized and centred capsular opening supports stable positioning of the intraocular lens, which is particularly relevant when a toric, multifocal, trifocal or EDOF lens is planned.

It does not replace the surgeon

The laser step is an aid to precision. Surgical judgement, the phacoemulsification technique and the intraoperative decisions remain with the surgeon. At Perfect Vision, Dr. Virendra Agrawal plans and performs the procedure under sterile theatre protocols.

When conventional surgery is preferred

Poor pupil dilation, certain corneal opacities, difficulty maintaining position during docking or specific anatomical factors can make standard micro-incision surgery the more sensible route. Cost is also discussed openly, since laser assistance is an additional component.
